Jobs for the summer gardener

There is no time to sit back and relax… until the gardening is done anyway!

Sorry we’ve been a bit quiet on the blog front, there have been a lot of hedges to cut, lawns to mow and even half a brick playhouse to be built this summer so far.

It has been really busy, with Neil in Padbury covering Buckingham, Winslow, out to Wicken and all the little villages dotted around. Craig has been over in Milton Keynes, taking care of everything from the gardens in new builds to more commercial contracts with letting agents, landlords, nurseries, GP and dental surgeries and other business around MK.

So getting down to business, this is what you should be thinking about in the garden now, as we hit the half-way mark in July.

Look after your sweet peas, water them, trail them, pick the flowers a couple of times per week, remove the seed pods to keep them flowering.

The sun this year has been amazing, the geraniums have loved it, the fuchsias had to be moved and have actually flourished in the shade. Now is the time to take cuttings from your fuchsias.

Get ready to plant your autumn flowering bulbs, including begonias, dahlia and crocuses.

Water your beds, dead head plants and keep an eye out for snails, despite the dry weather we have had them clambering around the sweet peas.

Sow your biennials: fox gloves, forget-me-nots and wallflowers ready for next year.

Keep weeding, it will be worth it in the long run as the weeds won’t set seed or have you wrenching to get them out at the root.

As always, keep your lawn neat and tidy. If it gets overgrown and then you cut it, it won’t look as good as it did until a few more grass cuts later.

Now is also a great time to get on the projects you’ve been thinking about; low maintenance gravel options, going the other way and turfing, or taking an overgrown, wild garden to task and getting it under control while you still have time to make the most of the results.
